Wednesday@Indaba Loft! Day Two!

Holy crazy crap. It's only day two and I'm already in need of a very long nap. Yesterday was amazing—we had such a weird slew of bands that it worked for everyone. Best moment? Lead singer of Cut Off Your Hands climbing on the ceiling pipes. Mmhmm. Nuts.

Day two is here and I'm so excited for Division Day to be back in New York City and an early evening set from my loves, the Undisputed Heavyweights. With those bookends and incredible acts in between, no nap will be allowed.

Indaba Loft is located at 268 Bowery, just below Houston. All shows are free, for all ages, and free beer for 21+. See you there!

take a deep breath and hold it in

Holy moley. It's finally FRIDAY. I swear these weeks have been kicking my ass, as of late, and with a big move this weekend (to where? nowhere!) I've hardly had a chance to catch my breath. I've been overtly stressed, overtly anxious, and overtly tired and I'm pretty sure it's that much harder because I'm used to summers being relaxed. Not this year, of course.

But that's not to say I haven't had any fun, because I have. I'm at a very good place now in my life, and I couldn't be happier about how things are progressing. Plus, I'm off to London in a couple weeks for a much much needed vacation and to see the parentals (one of which, just met Prince Charles - crazy!) bringing along Pat who will be making his first trip overseas. Yipee!

But one of the biggest honors I've had as of late is being asked to write the liner notes to one of my favorite New York artists, Wakey!Wakey!. He will be releasing a live EP on Family Records, of that fabulous show back in April. I cant even begin to explain (or, okay, give away the liners) how great this guy is. Last night I was at Joe's Pub to see the Undisputed Heavyweights for the millionth time (and they are still as wonderful as always) and we were treated to having Wakey open. I was there with five other gals as a sort of goodbye party for my dear roommate (we will miss you!). All six of us girls were completely enamored with Mr. Wakey!Wakey!. And not just for the beard, I swear. His set was heartfelt and honest. He's quite a charming character, which always seems to invoke lots of chuckles and "aw goshs" but when heading into his last song -- the amazing "Car Crash" the laughs stopped, and Wakey shined. The song [listen here] is brutally raw and at times uncomfortable. But man, I would not have had it any other way.

Undisputed Heavyweights rule. You've heard me praise them enough. Go see them again when they play Joe's Pub for their last night of their summer residency August 24 (that's a Friday, right Wes?) Seth Kallen will be opening.

Speaking of Seth, you must check out his blog. He and Ben from Jukebox The Ghost have been galavanting around England for the past couple weeks, and it looks as though they are having a super time. They even include videos and MP3s (one of which I'll post below). But go check out the blog before they come back stateside and forget how much fun blogging is.

This weekend, I'm off to try and relax while moving everything out of the Lower East Side apartment. Once I get a free moment, I'm going to post an awesome mix that will try and sum up what it's like to live in that part of town. It sure has been fun, but I think I'll enjoy the quieter atmosphere of Chelsea!

Toodles.

Jukebox The Ghost Goes To The Zoo

I had one of the most amazing birthday weekends, most noteably due to Pat's wonderful show he put on for me on Saturday night. I really couldn't have asked for a better party. Tally Hall was a huge surprise, and did a short but sweet set of covers that left me with the biggest grin ever. I'm going to put up a bunch of pictures this week (with my new camera yay!) but for now, check out Pat's recap of the night and this...

In case you weren't aware that is members of four (!) different bands on stage singing me the Beatle's Birthday: Jukebox The Ghost, Seth Kallen & The Reaction, Tally Hall, and Wes from the Undisputed Heavyweights. Frickin amazing!

Speaking of Jukebox The Ghost, I went to the zoo with the band yesterday for a blog post up on CMJ.com. It was a really fun experience, complete with amazing pictures. Check out the post here.

Wisdom teeth go bye bye tomorrow. More soon!

Cross-Pollination: The Mixtape Vol 1

And so it goes. My laptop decided to die on me last week, so I haven't been able to post much when I'm at home. Luckily, I've made a valiant effort in staying in more, getting enough sleep, and going to the allergy doctor every week to tell me something new that I'm allergic to. It's a lot of fun. You should try it some time.

And yet there's one place on a weekly basis that I can go and it feels very much like home. Most Tuesday nights you will find me upstairs at Pianos, where Cross-Pollination takes place. Organized by two overachievers but extreme music lovers, every week I am introduced to two new local talents. But this is not all, after each do their solo set, they then "cross-pollinate" for a short set together. Sometimes it's unreal, sometimes it's a bit iffy, but it's always a unique experience that shows just how innovative and creative musicians today can be, if given the chance.

To celebrate, the wonderful creators have released a free mix-tape of past performers. It's a great collection, and even better than it's free! You will recognize a lot of the artists from this blog, as I discovered most of them there on a random Tuesday night. I wrote a news story about the series and mixtape over at CMJ, you can read that here. Below is the mixtape in its entirety, for more information head on over to Liberated Matter.

The Undisputed Heavyweights @ KidRockers | Live EP!!

Saturday night I may have drank a bit too much, but that didn't stop me from heading all the way up to 110th Street on a Sunday afternoon to see my beloved Undisputed Heavyweights perform at The Underground Lounge as part of the KidRockers series. KidRockers is a fairly new idea put together by some super-hip parents, bringing in two acts on a regular basis to perform for a bunch of kids and their parents. Seriously -- fun for the whole family.

Artists perform original, not specifically made for kids songs in an authentic and kid-friendly venue. And let me tell you, these kids were the coolest ever. Not only were they requesting songs from James Levy and The Heavyweights, but they were rocking out to Bob Dylan before the show. I only wish I could be that cool.

Watching The Undisputed Heavyweights perform in front of a crowd of kids was interesting and enjoyable. Perhaps it's because when I watch this band perform, I feel like a six year old -- giddy and enthusiastic, entranced by Casey Shea's antics and persona. One kid kept telling Casey he was crazy. Yes, he totally is, which is why this band is ideal for any age group. You'll always feel young at heart.

The greatest moment was when the band played a truncated version of "Bitches Been Trippin" (cut out the whole bitches part). Casey exclaimed that he had the "stay in school" blues and that he gets mistaken for Harry Potter too often. The kids loved it. And the organizers of KidRockers handed out sunglasses for all them to wear, sharing in Casey's blues. What a sight to see.

All the pictures above were taken by Sarah Ivy, and more can be found on The Undisputed Heavyweight's flickr. Check out KidRockers over at myspce.com/kidrockersnyc.

The Heavyweights will be playing next Thursday at Mercury Lounge (February 22) as a release party of their first ever Live EP. Live From New York City is the first in a series of EPs from Family Records, a division of Liberated Matter.

The EP features six songs recorded over at Joe's Pub, by Ryan Ryspace, with one bonus track recorded at Rockwood Music Hall. The EP will also include 11 (!) videos from various performances and backstage antics. Partial proceeds of each EP sold will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Sowbackya Illam Children's Home in India.

Live From New York City is the first volume in a limited edition box set, called, The Bootleg Series. The Series, which will be released under Family Records, will feature several local artists. Super exciting.

It's been a long time coming to have an official release from The Heavyweights. Consider yourself lucky, and pick one up on Thursday at Mercury Lounge!

Lost....?

I should be excited for Lost to come back. But like Whitney, life without the show hasn't been that treacherous. I had plenty of other shows to keep me occupied, and I can't even remember how the last part of the season ended. Thank god for the hour recap.

But it's also that I don't want to get excited. Because if I get excited, that will only lead to disappointment. I'd much rather expect the worst. So the dog will die tonight. That's my bet. Where is that dog, anyways?

Um, has anyone else seen this? A Lost music video? Oy vey.

This song is so much better.

The Undisputed Heavyweights @ Joe's Pub (take two)

The Undisputed Heavyweights @ Joe's Pub

I will always remember seeing The Undisputed Heavyweights for the very first time. I had no idea what to expect, and then I heard Casey Shea tell the crowd a song was dedicated to me because I had just been fired from my job. He made the crowd scream, "Damn the man." I was flabbergasted, and in awe. This band has that thing called the it factor. I knew it then, and I know it now. After countless shows and repeated blog postings, I still find myself falling for this band more and more each time.

And I will never forget last night's show at Joe's Pub.

Like I said, I've seen this band at least 15 times by now. I know the whole routine. But never had I been serenaded before. During my favorite song (and a top 25 of 2006) "Lost (On An Island)" or as they are calling it now "Girl Like You," Mr. Shea took my hand and crooned away. I think a little piece of my heart melted in that instant. Albeit being completely embarrassed, I know it's one of those times that I'll remember with a great big smile.

And the rest of the show? Brilliant. Spectacular. Surreal. (Insert more adjectives here)

I just cannot tell you enough how great this band is. You won't believe me until you experience it yourself. They are the ideal balance between talent and show, with each moment above and beyond the last. If I had my way, I'd see this band play every night of the week, no joke.

One of my regrets last time they played this venue was that they didn't bring back "Casey" an extraordinary number in which Mr. Shea laments to himself over a glass of red wine. It providing the highlight of the evening this time around, with Casey down on his hands and knees in a magical moment that the crowd just couldn't get enough of.

Look out for a live EP coming your way by the time of their next show, February 22 at Mercury Lounge. Seriously, if you're looking for an escape from the hohumdum of what's being called indie rock these days, check this band out. I personally guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

    BLOG SHOW #16

Another super special Blog Show on BreakThru Radio. This time around we had some fun guests stop by (thanks in large part to the fact that I now have a couch!) Rob from the band Morning Theft came by to premiere super exclusive new tracks from their upcoming record. The band is also playing Mercury Lounge tonight, and Nora said drinks are on her if you come by. Success!

To celebrate this pretty cool show I have coming up on Saturday, Seth Kallen stopped by and played a couple tracks, including an amazing solo version of "Strange Man." It was so good, in fact, that I made it into an mp3 for all you.

  • Seth Kallen - Strange Man (live acoustic)

SPEAKING OF AMAZING LIVE SONGS. If you haven't listened to Undisputed Heavyweights live session on BreakThru Radio, you must do so immediately. I gushed about the set on Tuesday and now I got my favorite song of the set, "Bitches Be Trippin'" in which Casey was top notch. The best I've ever heard this song.

The Undisputed Heavyweights live on BTR

So I'm not sure if you've been able to tell by now, but I happen to write about the same bands over and over, basically shoving their music down your throats because, well, it's fantastic and deserves to be heard. One of those lucky bands has been The Undisputed Heavyweights who I've declared as my favorite band to see live in NYC with no hesitation, watched their hysterical podcasts over and over again, reviewed every show (from Philly and back), and gushed, gushed gushed.

I can't help myself. They really are that good.

    Undisputed Heavyweights @ BTR

With that said, here's yet another opportunity to hear what I babble about on a regular basis. Last week we asked the band to record a live session for BreakThru Radio. It was a truly once in a lifetime experience that I know I'll remember fondly for a long time. Being as they are one of my favorite bands ever, I know their songs and live set like the back of my hand. But something was special in that room that night. Perhaps it was the inclusion of bringing in some of their die-hard fans to witness the event, but there for some reason I have never heard the band sound better. Casey's voice was the perfect balance between rasp and soul, and I couldn't stop from running around the room and asking others if it was just me. Nope, it wasn't.

    Absolutely amazing.

You can check out the live session (FOR FREE) here. I'll have the session in an mp3 format for all of you by week's end. You must listen.

Sadly as impressed as you will be, you will not be able to make it to their Joe's Pub show this Thursday because it is sold out. I am so so so so so so (insert a million more so's) excited to see this band in this setting for a second time around. And the band just got reviewed by The New Yorker, which is huge. And it was nothing but praise.

"The local favorites in the Undisputed Heavyweights come armed with lounge-ready shtick, but they are more than just tongue-in-cheek hipsters. Brandishing acoustic guitars and a horn section, the Heavyweights deliver an accomplished rock/blues/soul hybrid, and their endearingly uninhibited front man, Casey Shea, puts them right in the tradition of vaudevillian showmanship. With the singer-songwriter Matt Singer."

Now that's what I'm talking about.

More pictures from the session here.

    A Night Out in Philly

Even if it's just for one night, it's quite nice to get out of the city. And it's even nicer when you have a friend who is willing to drive to Philly during rush hour. Katie and I sat in excruciating traffic on the way down, while we chain-smoked and listened to tunes. She played me the new Brand New. I played her the new Shins. We both danced to Panic! At The Disco and discussed future projects. Too bad by the time we made it to Philly we had missed half of The Undisputed Heavyweights' set. Wes didn't take my text messages seriously for Casey to stall until we got there. I was bummed because I really wanted Katie to get the full experience, but we'll make sure we get to Joe's Pub bright and early.

I wish my camera actually worked because not only would I have fabulous shots of all the bands, but I could show you how beautiful World Cafe Live in Philly is. I felt like I had walked into an old dinner theater. Seth compared it to a larger Joe's Pub, and I must say the acoustics and ambiance are definitely worthy of a rival. There was a great crowd, super energy, and all for a worthy cause.

Some may say I'm crazy for driving to different cities to see bands I've seen more times than should be shared. I call it my civic duty.

    Anyways.

After The Heavyweights was a young kid named Jon Check who could easily be head of the John Mayer class of rock. This isn't an insult, as I do happen to think Mr. Mayer is quite talented (when he's not sucking face with Jessica Simpson). Jon Check has a certain ease to him in performance, and a hell of a voice. Teamed up with a band and an impressive female vocalist, he incorporated jazz and rock into a solid set. His debut album can be purchased here.

The man of the hour, and the one who put together the entire night, Mr. Seth Kallen took the stage next, backed by his ever growing band The Reaction. Now with two lead guitarists, Katie and I were both worried that a fight might break out between to two over parts. No dice, they played a tight set, without any blood. Miss Melody Gardot joined Seth on stage for "My Sweet Darling" which is always a treat, and they ended with "No Ace" that was pure rock and soul. I think the entire crowd was left quite impressed.

Katie and I had now been drinking consistently since we arrived and the vodka tonics were catching up to us. We bummed around backstage with The Heavyweights before they caught their train back to the city, and Katie and I were off to...well, another bar. We met up with my older brother outside the city and became ridiculously ecstatic upon realizing their vodka/tonics were only $3! Now that is what I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure I exclaimed numerous times that evening my newfound love for Philadelphia, and I stand by that even the next day. Not only for it's cheap drinks -- all in all, it sure showed me a good time.

Like I said, it's always nice to get out of the city.

Seth Kallen & The Reaction, The Undisputed Heavyweights to play charity show in Philly

    DJ Eko takes over

Tomorrow I am jetting out of good old New York to head over to Philly to see Seth Kallen & The Reaction and The Undisputed Heavyweights play at World Cafe Live. Part of the proceeds from this show will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the Sowbackya Illam Children's Home in India. There will also be a charity raffle for the event as well as grab bags at the door full of independent music and artist merchandise.

Tickets are only $9 if you buy them in advance or $12 at the door. If you live in Philly, you should definitely come...and if not...Katie is driving, so free ride! Also on the bill is Jon Check and Funky Butter.

The Undisputed Heavyweights will be returning to Joe's Pub on January 25, which I couldn't be more excited for. Seth Kallen will be playing the next "Underrated Presents" at Sin-e on January 27. Full lineup to be announced next week!

    Underrated's Top 25 Songs of 2006

Well here it is my friends. The final list of 2006 and frankly I need a nap after all this. But I couldn't let this year go by without pointing out some of my favorite songs. I opted to leave out all the artists on my Top 25 Albums and Top 5 EPs so that we could share the love. Most of these songs ended up being songs I djed for most of the year, which seems suitable. As appreciative as I am of the subtle art of a complete record, I've always been a songs type of gal. It was hard, once again to nail it down to just this many and actually order them, but I did my best.

    Enjoy.

    1. Young Folks - Peter Bjorn and John [mp3]
This song was on practically everyone's year-end song list, and with good reason. I think I must have played this song a record 1,000 times this year. And that's not counting my iPod. This is song writing at it's perfection, the lackadaisical melody that is incredibly inviting, combined with whistling. Yes whistling. If you can get a great song and add someone whistling, you've immediately won me over. Not to mention the dueling vocals, as well. If someone was teaching a class with the fundamentals of an indie hit, this would be lesson #1. You can't get much better than this.

    2. The Plot - White Rabbits [mp3]
This seems ridiculous to put a song that I only heard less than two months ago at #2 of my year of songs post. But trust me. I know when I love a song, and this song was immediately pressed on repeat. I remember the first time I saw this band play, the song was already stuck in my head after the first chorus. That's when you know it's good. I hear that's called memorable? Ah yes. That is good.

    3. Cobrastyle - Teddybears [mp3]
This was easily my favorite song to dj, and if no one else was dancing you could bet I would be. Nora first told me about this Swedish group, and then I think I saw this song on an episode of Entourage and was hooked. It's a little bit reggae, a little rock, with nonsense words that are incredibly difficult to utter after a couple drinks. But hands down, the most fun track of the year that will always put me in a party mood.

    4. Sexyback - Justin Timberlake [mp3]
Shocked, yes shocked to have Justin Timberlake on my playlist. No, it's not that I'm opposed to any #1 hits or anything on commercial radio (trust me), but as a reformed teeny bopper I hated N'Sync. I even hated Justin Timberlake for a while too. But this song is so god damn catchy that I could not have left it out of my list, let alone out of the top five. Will I ever get sick of it? Probably. But right now, I'm bringing sexy back.

    5. Dancing Shoes - Arctic Monkeys [mp3]
This song was so good, I named a party after it. I was hesitant not to include their full-length album in my top ten, but I must admit that every time I listened to it, I kept coming back to this song. It brings me back to my nights at Pianos with great fondness, and even playing it every single week, it never got old. It's got a great beat, a pounding chorus and well...let's face it, it's impossible not to dance to. Oh man, I'm dancing right now.

    6. Over and Over - Hot Chip [mp3]
My roommate plays this song, a lot. Something to do with her time at Urban, I crown this song the indie kid's dance anthem of the year. It's not too in your face that spazzing will ensue, but chill enough that even the worst dancers can find the beat. That's all the hipsters ask for, right? Not to look like a fool? The Hot Chip remixes are always superb, but this track takes the cake. Repetitive without apologies, I could groove to this track for all of 2007.

    7. Lost (On An Island) - The Undisputed Heavyweights [mp3]
It's no shocker that I am completely obsessed with The Undisputed Heavyweights. I plan to follow them around until I get the boot, and will sing every single one of their songs as loud as I possibly can, although I'll never be able to outshine Mr. Casey Shea. I had a very hard time trying to pick my favorite song of theirs of the year, but I had to side with our shared obsession. The Heavyweights and I are equally as in love with Lost, and they even went to the extreme of writing a song inspired by that wacky TV show. What resulted was a beautiful love song harboring on the swooning of old school greats, perfectly executed with charm and finesse. I'll never forget the first time I heard them play this song live at Rockwood, when Casey shot me a little grin before they started. In only took a second for me to fall completely in love.

    8. Ooh La La - Goldfrapp [mp3]
I'm always floored whenever I dj this song and the crowd goes nuts. The build up is pure intoxication and Goldfrapp kick it up a notch in all the right places. If you stand still during this song, I urge you to check yourself into a hospital. It's a flirty escape into europop for exactly three minutes. Don't resist the pull. Just go with it. Let loose. Go crazy.

    9. Postcards From Italy - Beirut [mp3]
Everything told me to hate Beirut. They were creamed to the crop by the blogosphere, I couldn't dance to it, and it sounded weird upon first listen. I wanted to hate it. I really did. But then I found myself listening to Postcards From Italy over and over again and daydreaming that I was traveling in Europe with some tall dark and handsome suitor with a very big floppy hair. (Don't know why the hat, but just go with it). With the nice opening strum of the guitar, to the falsetto in this young boys voice, and even the addition of a horn section, Beirut has justified its take on a completely forgotten genre and in the process made it cool again. Quite the achievement, if you ask me.

    10. Everyone's Starting Over (Casettes Wont Listen Remix) - The Diggs [mp3]
I was in love with this song even before I heard it, that love on premise alone. See, I love The Diggs. Always have, always will. My favorite song on their debut album was hands down "Everyone's Starting Over." So when I heard New York genius Cassettes Wont Listen was doing a remix, I was so pumped. Luckily enough, it came out flawless, with a dreamy like electronic mix perfectly combating Tim's powerful vocals. Someone get this ready for a movie or a commercial. I wanna hear it everywhere.

Tune in today and all week to "The Blog Show" as we go back and pay respect where respect is due. And sorry if I sound a bit cracked out on this week's episode. I was on a lot of cold medicine.

Lost (On An Island) | The Undisputed Heavyweights

Okay, let's sidetrack from music for just a minute here. I missed the first part series finale of Lost last week for some Tally Hallness, but caught the episode when I was in Maryland this weekend doing the whole family thing. I had heard mixed reviews about it, and then my sister hyped it up by saying how good it was. Regardless there was no way I'd miss the show, so let's just continue.

I didn't care for the episode. In fact, I haven't really cared for this whole season. But when I compare it to some of the other crap on TV, and think about how genius the first season of the show was, I'm still hooked. I just think that the writers have taken some sleeping pills and forgot how many people were watching the show. I won't give much away, but come on. I'm a big fan of cheesy romantic stories, but not in this show. I want action. I want theories. I want to be confused enough that I can still talk about it for hours afterwards. I want fate vs. science, and crazy flashbacks. Come on Lost, bring that back.

Working my way back to music, every Wednesday a group of us gets together to adhere to our addiction with a big HDTV screen. It's funny, because there are three different bands present, and one crazed blogger. One of those people is a member of The Undisputed Heavyweights, who is equally as obsessed with the show as the rest of us, if not more.

In fact, it was Wes who introduced me to the beauty of Lostcasts, who we declared as website of the week a little while back.

Sadly, the Lostcasts boys have had some mic problems this week so there is no podcast just yet for the part 1 season finale. BUT, they do link their "Lost Links" to The Undisputed Heavyweights song "Lost (On An Island)" that is up on their myspace page. Yes, this song is indeed inspired by the show. And yes, this song is indeed fantastic. I get goosebumps every time they play this song live, just waiting for Eko to pop out from behind me and dance around with his stick.

Speaking of, The Heavyweights are playing this Thursday at Rockwood Music Hall. It's free, and god damn they are wonderful, so please do not miss it. They will be taking a bit of a hiatus for the rest of the year, so get your fix in now.

    CMJ: The Recap | Pictures

I am ready to move on past CMJ related posts, but I must say as exhausting as this entire week was, I had a really great time. With the chance to see a lot of my favorite bands all within hours of eachother, catch up with some old friends, and find an excuse to start drinking at 11 AM...for free, I can't really complain about anything.

Except that I know I missed all of the amazing shows that everyone else will repremand me for, but I am only one gal. I am also partial to the bands I hold near and dear to my heart, and will never pass up the opportunity to sing and dance my heart out seeing them live. So no, I didn't go to even half the shows I expected/wanted to, but I did get to see some really incredible ones. I have a bunch of pictures up on flickr, but here are some of my favorites.
