It's only the 5th day of 2006, but I feel like this year is off to quite the start. All the blogs are buzzing, bands are posting new tour dates, and I'm falling in love with new bands each day. Now that all those year end lists are over, everyone's back to the regular scheduled postings. Expect some love for some new favorite bands, as well as a whole bunch of updates on the future of Underrated and this blog. It's looking pretty good, I must say.

Random News & Notes:

  • Brooklyn Vegan puts his vote in for We Are Scientists to be the big NY band of the year, beating out MTV-featured Morningwood. I'd have to agree, although I am a fan of their new song "Nth Degree." It's guity-pleasure pop with a little bit of quirkiness from the hyper (and hyped) band.

  • Nightmare of You will open for Hard-Fi at Bowery Ballroom on January 17. This is good, because I missed their show last time due to the strike. You can go here for a free download of "Why Am I Always Right."

  • Jay Good Times announced new dates for The Subways, including a show at Bowery Ballroom on March 7. New Yorkers: learn the songs and get ready to rock. I don't want to see you standing around like last time.

  • Chris of Gorilla vs. Bear fame has his own radio station you can listen to. Check out all the great bands he talks about every day.

  • I Guess I'm Floating, a new favorite blog, "seriously loves" Cali-based band Birdmonster. I've been listening to the band as of late as well, and I have to say I agree. More on them in a future post.

  • Texas is the new black. There are some fantastic bands coming out of this state that I've never been to, and Garrison of IndieInterviews.com points out which will explode this year. My money's on Voxtrot. I'm obsessed.

  • The Modernage posts this hilarious picture of Josh & Ari from The Upwelling. I'm still laughing.

  • Tapes 'n' Tapes are about to take over New York City, with 4, count it, 4 shows in the next week. I'll probably go to two of them, because I’ve fallen under the same spell as every other blogger that loves them. Sixeyes has a hilarious interview with the band and provides us with three songs to download.

  • Take Your Medicine is my favorite UK blog. Recently, he tells us the Arctic Monkey's album will be released here on February 21 and prescribed Voxtrot. Have I mentioned I love this band?

  • A Brief Smile revamps their website and provides an update about their new EP. They also will be playing in the Underrated kickoff show at Crash Mansion on January 27 with Five O'Clock Heroes and more to be announced very soon.

And that's all the news thats fit to print..or that I can think of right now...
